The
Hetrick Funeral Home was built in the mid eighteen hundreds. This was actually
the home of Daniel Reichert. He was a well-known builder in the Harrisburg
area. One of his best known structures is the "Star Barn" situated
off of Route 283 in Lower Swatara Township.
Mr. Reichert built this
structure as his home. It was known as "North View" because of the
large entryway and porch, which faced Walnut Street. As the years passed and
Walnut Street changed from a dirt road with trolley tracks to a busy commercial
road, the entrance was changed to where it is today.
Lawrence A
Hetrick bought the property in the early 1900's. The property was approximately
5 acres with the main building, pastures and an orchard where the lower parking
lot is today. In 1930 the Stone house was constructed next to the funeral home.
The funeral home structure was the Hetrick Dress Shop. Nell Graham Mathew
Hetrick had started a dress shop in the middle of the depression and it was
known as one of the finest dress shops in the area.
After
graduating from Franklin and Marshall College, George M. Hetrick Sr. attended
the Cincinnati School of Embalming in 1938 and returned to Harrisburg to open
the Hetrick Funeral Home in 1941.
The funeral home has been family
owned and operated since its founding. Today Graham S. Hetrick, FD, B.C.F.E. is
the President and CEO of the Company.
Over the years funeral service
has changed but the concept of our family serving your family has never changed.
For three generations we have seen our role in the community as a calling
rather than an occupation. Even in this sometimes cynical world we still feel
comfortable in saying, "We Care."
